Box in a suitcase: An homage to Marcel Duchamp by French contemporary artists

22FEB14-08JUN14

Museum Alex Mylona - Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and the French Institute of Greece present the exhibition “Box in a suitcase – An homage to Marchel Duchamp by French contemporary artists”.

The exhibition will open on Saturday the 22nd of February at 12.00 at Museum Alex Mylona – Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, and will run until the 8th of June (extended). Pierre Labat, who participates in the exhibition with the project Slabs City, will be attending the opening.

According to the curator of the exhibition, Denys Zacharopoulos: The exhibition that is presented for the first time worldwide besides France, borrows its title from the famous artwork by Marcel Duchamp, which he created when he moved to USA as a mobile museum showcasing his miniature creations.

The exhibition is a highly innovative conception of France and its institutions, using its knowledge of art history in order to help young artists show their work with greater ease even to the most remote places in the world. It suggests that we consider the circulation of works and the promotion of artists.  The “Suitcase in a Box’ is in its own right a work of art and an exhibition, a historic reference and a challenge. This particular exhibition includes fifteen of the most interesting artists from the younger generation of French artists of today, who represent almost all kinds of artistic expression. With that in mind the artists were invited to conceive this specific project in accordance to a protocol: to place their work (painting, installation, video, sculpture, even performance) inside a suitcase.

The artist can choose whether or not to include the box in a suitcase in the presentation of his/her work. Fifteen boxes were created and it’s been proposed to each exhibition space to set up its own exhibition by selecting which boxes it will present or activate.

The curators of the exhibition are the Greek collaborator of the project, Denys Zacharopoulos, Artistic Director of the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art and former Inspecteur Général of Fine Arts for the French Ministry of Culture and Art Historian Alexios Papazacharias.

Participating artists: Farah Atassi, Laëtitia Badaut-Haussmann, Jonathan Binet, Gaëlle Boucand, Louise Hervé & Chloé Maillet, Renaud Jerez, Pierre Labat, Christophe Lemaitre, Émilie Pitoiset, Élisa Pône, Julien Prévieux, Florian Pugnaire & David Raffini, Benjamin Seror, Clément Rodzielski, Shingo Yoshida.

It is important to mention that Julien Prévieux is nominated for the 2014 edition of the Marcel Duchamp Prize, one of the greatest French awards in contemporary art, organized by the Association for the International Diffusion of French Art (ADIAF).
