Athens Photo Festival

04JUN15-26JUL15

Athens Photo Festival is the most important festival dedicated to photography in Southeastern Europe and a premier cultural event in Athens, established in 1987 by the Hellenic Centre for Photography. It is the longest running festival of photography and related media in Greece, and one of the five oldest of its kind in the world.

Each year the festival focuses on a specific theme, encompassing a range of photo-based forms including photography, installations, multimedia and photobooks. The 2015 edition’s theme under the title “Reframing Memory” explores how photographers and artists today represent past/history, defining the social changes they undergo, bringing together a wide range of international artistic positions.

The main programme of the Athens Photo Festival 2015 will be presented at the Benaki Museum from 3 June to July 26, 2015. Exploring issues relevant to our times, the festival work both internationally and locally, encompassing a variety of initiatives that enable people to understand and enjoy photography. At the core of the festival is a series of featured exhibitions by artists from around the world as well as a range of events such as portfolio reviews, talks, screenings and educational activities. In addition to the main venue-based section, the satellite programme encourages community involvement through parallel exhibitions and activities across the city of Athens in galleries, cultural centres and institutions.

The Athens Photo Festival is continually evolving with the times and looks forward to expanding its network and enhancing opportunities for interaction and engagement with local and international communities. Since 2014 is a member of the European Month of Photography (short EMoP) – which is the European association of 8 European Capitals and their Festivals in the field of photography. The EMoP, is celebrating 10 years regular collaboration between partner cities and welcomes Athens as a new member! EMoP is a structure which works on a bi-annual production of exhibitions in each member city, curatorial activity supported mostly by University researchers resulting in publications on photography.
