Rethink Athens: Architectural transformation of the city center in 2016!

If you are already one of those people who can’t get enough of Athens, just wait and see what the new city center will look like after it is completely redesigned, as promised by the Rethink Athens Competition.

Imagine what the center of Athens would look like if the entire area surrounding Panepistimiou Street was transformed, if the surroundings became markedly greener, and if residents could get around without cars. Just think what the life of the local residents and the urban experience of the tourists would be like if the buildings, squares, and roads were utilized differently.

These ideas are now on their way to being materialized following the completion of the Rethink Athens architectural competition that was organized by the Onassis Foundation following an invitation on behalf of the Greek State. Rethink Athens is one of the most environmentally friendly, auspicious, and extensive plans to have come about over the recent years, with locals and visitors alike anxiously awaiting to experience, touch, and… tour the finished product. The project will be completed in 2016 and will include features like a new Panepistimiou Street – not strictly pedestrian, but pedestrian friendly, while also accessible to bicycles and mass transit -, an extended tram line, and a completely redesigned, vibrant Omonia Square.
